Let’s get ready for an easy winter day hike while I give you some tips!

*You don’t need this all to hike, but winter is less forgiving. Even if it is an easy route, preparation is half the battle! AST1 training is recommended for more advanced winter hikes.

✍️SAVE THIS PACKING LIST:

Clothes
- Moisture wicking top and bottom @smartwool_canada
- Insulating mid-layer (fleece) @patagonia
- Insulated jacket (down or synthetic)
- Waterproof shell (jacket and pants) @arcteryxbc @mammutna

Accessories
- hat
- wool liner gloves @decathloncanada
- waterproof gloves @auclairsports
- wool socks (w/ extra)
- gaiters @outdoorresearch

Footwear
- Waterproof boots @keencanada
- Microspikes @kahtoola

Safety Gear
- Headlamp (+extra batteries) @blackdiamond
- Whistle
- Emergency blanket @sierramadregear
- First aid

Food
- snacks
- 1-2L of water

Extras
- Sunglasses / ski goggles (for snow glare)
- sit pad @dutchware_gear
- poles w/ snow baskets

TIPS:

1️⃣First, start colder. Layering is key! The goal is to stay warm without overheating.

2️⃣ Ensure the shells have venting zips to regulate temperature

3️⃣Use waterproof boots, don’t forget spikes. I’m surprised how many people hike without them and fall

4️⃣Avoid carbon fibre poles/tripods, they can snap in the cold. Bring alumnimum poles that have snow baskets.

5️⃣Carry a headlamp (+ extra batteries) even if you don’t plan on hiking in the dark, and emergency tools

6️⃣Don’t use a hydration pack in winter because the tube can freeze, and your squeeze filter won’t work in sub-zero temps. I pack warm water in an insulated bottle

7️⃣Bring a sit pad so that you don’t have to sit on wet snow when taking a break.

8️⃣In addition to a waterproof backpack, bring spare garbage bags.

9️⃣Bear spray may not be needed for winter hikes on well-trafficked trails, but for less-traveled areas, it provides extra safety since some bears may not fully hibernate in milder climates. Keep it warm to prevent freezing
