This is how I dream of weekends to be…but instead they’re full of catching up with life, work and people. They are all things that I’m grateful I get to do, but sometimes, I’d like to catch a break, yknow? Sometimes a weekend alone in the mountains is just what we need 💛

a hike that unexpectedly altered our brain chemistry…

To be completely honest, we felt like bailing on this hike after we had already done Pacaya and Acatenango/Fuego overnighter hikes right before it and we were TIRED. But, we still dragged our bodies out of bed at 3am for this and there were zero regrets 🥹

All you need to do is hire a guide for the sunrise hike since the trailhead requires driving through the night to another town to start.

Plus it passes through private property and in the dark it’s very easy to get lost. There would typically be a fee to pass through the farmland but with a guide we did not have to pay anything extra.

Luckily, the hike itself is really easy. It’s only about 3km RT with less then 200m gain if you do the sunrise route that starts from Santa Clara La Laguna. If you want the harder longer route there is an option from San Juan La Laguna. It’s a short hike with an incredible reward!

At the top everyone sits in an amphitheatre lookout and the guides serve you coffee/hot chocolate and bread (which was such a pleasant surprise 🥰).

You’ll get the most stunning sunrise views…a cloud inversion with the surrounding volcanoes (San Pedro, Atitlán, and Tolimán).

TL;DR: do not miss this hike when you’re in Lake Atitlan, and add it to your bucketlist!!

It all started when I wanted to explore more epic places in less time and feel stronger on trails to prevent injury. I wasn’t a runner until very recently (2 years ago), and I couldn’t even run a 5k without feeling I’m dying. Now, I’ve tackled multiple marathons on road and the trail, and now entering the mountain ultramarathon world 😱
