(PS. You can actually hike up this mountain which is famous for being the grand view you see as you drive up to Banff. It’s Cascade Mountain, an 18.5km trail with 1600m of gain - rated hard and not for the faint of heart! Underrated fall hike for larches in Banff National

Underrated fall hike for larches in Banff National Park? 😱 (Send this reel to your hiking buddy!)

If you’re tired of the hoards of tourists at the hikes near Banff town (like Tunnel Mountain or Sulphur Mountain) but you still want a chill day hike, try this one.

You won’t often hear of a front country Banff hike that’s not busy but also has beautiful views of larch trees!

It is surprisingly quiet; we only saw about 20 people on the trail during a sunny Saturday.

TRAIL DEETS:
🏔️This trail takes you along the lower slopes of Cascade Mountain, the famous towering peak that you see as you enter the park.

⛏️Along the way, you’ll see remnants of an old coal mine which is actually where the hike got its name.

🐟At the top, you’ll get a nice view of three lakes: Lake Minnewanka, Two Jack Lake, and Johnson Lake.

🧗It doesn’t take you to a summit but if you do choose to scramble it is dangerous and no longer a moderate hike so be prepared with proper gear. The scramble is not part of the trail.

🅿️Parking is free and plentiful at the Upper Bankhead Day Use area.

🐶Dog and family friendly!

📈Trail is around 10km total with 720m gain and will take 2-3 hours to hike.

🏃‍♀️The terrain is also great for trail running as much of it is through the forest.

🥾Wear proper shoes because some parts of the trail have slippery lose rocks.

🌱Please leave no trace when visiting!

🌲Note this is not indicative of current conditions. Apparently winter has arrived early so we’re crossing our fingers for larch season!

Tell me I’m not the only one who feels like summer flew by at the speed of light…I can’t believe we only have two days left before fall starts! We’re in denial and definitely feeling the pressure to pack in 4 weeks of hiking this weekend 😂

Most hikers forget to do this…do you?

It’s simple and quick, and could save our forests from harmful invaders. (A D)

The thing you’re probably not doing is…uploading all the photos you take of animals and plants to @inaturalistorg or EDDMapS to help identify invasive species!

Next time you go on a hike, do these simple steps:

1️⃣ Pre-download iNaturalist or EDDMapS apps
2️⃣ Take as many photos of plants and animals as you can
3️⃣ Upload them to the app and let experts identify them. They will help determine whether the species are invasive in the area you’re in.

If you’re in the backcountry without cell service, take a photo on your camera roll and upload it later!

You’ll be contributing to conservation efforts and it only takes a minute.

PS. It’s always a great idea to look up the signs and symptoms of invasive species so you know what to be on the lookout for before hiking too!
